I dunno. My last PC used to bug me about virtual memory. I threw a stick of ram in it, and that stopped that. It came with 128mb, and I added 1GB. Boot up was then 5 times as fast, and it surfed the web faster. This website is the absolute best to buy memory from for all the right reasons — price, quality, etc:

http://www.crucial.com/

You should add 1 GB if you can afford it, or 512 would be alright. There are two slots. The slot on the left always has the biggest ram. So if you get 512, just put it in the empty right slot. If you get 1 GB, move your old ram over to the right and put the new, bigger one in the left.
References :
it depends if u want to play games awesome get an alienware or a dell
if u want storage u will have to look but dell is probably best but if u want to play movies u want a computer wit a good graphics card in that case an alienware or a dell is good
look at the computer specs if it has a geforce 7000 (or sumthin lik that or better) then get it cuz its guaranteed that it will play good
References :
There really is no best brand. It all depends on what you want and what you expect from it. If you just want to go out and get a computer at bestbuy instead of building it yourself (which i recommend), then HP is the way to go. Dell and Gateway have been selling junk the past year or so.

What you really want to look at are the specs. Wether you want an Intel or AMD processor and how fast do you want it. How much RAM does it have. How much hard drive space.

If you're just the average user. An Intel Dual Core with 2.66 Ghz, 4 GB Ram, 320 GB hard drive, nvidia geforce 8600 graphics card (optional). Get all that and you'll be set for the next 5 years. It should all cost around 800 dollars.
References :
Hp usually is the best quality, though if you want to stay with Compaq, it doesn't matter; Hp bought out Compaq a few years ago.
References :
That's much like asking what the best brand of car is. It is highly subjective and depends on what you want in a computer.

If you're more of an enthusiast, or gamer, then you're going to want a computer with a lot more power and typically, higher end components then you're going to get from mainline brands like Dell, Compaq or HP. In this case, look at custom built PCs from places like CyberpowerPC, or at the high end, FalconNorthwest. Or, my personal preference, build your own. It's actually quite easy.

If you're just a general user, then it really comes down to price and customer service. The components in standard level machines from almost all makers are very similar, so unless you're looking at a component by component level upgrade, you won't notice any difference in performance between any of them. I used to like Dell for basic computers, but they've been falling off a bit lately in service and raising prices. This is of course, my own opinion.
References :
None of them. They all but their processors from intel and Amd, graphics cards from AMD, Intel and nvidia and use generic motherboards and ram. All the brand means is what sticker is on the box.

Im afraid the only way to get the most for your money is to look at all the individual models you can find in your price range and see what gives you the most for your money. Or consider buying the parts and making it yourself. Its pretty much impossible to do it wrong, you get more for your money and you learn enough about your computer to be your own tech support.
